WBA-MAD 2016/17 End of Season Report - The Defence

Last updated : 22 May 2017 By Wba-mad Editor

As the dust settles on another campaign of top flight football, WBA MAD Editor Iain Bate takes a look at how the squad performed last season. Let's take a look at Albion's backline.

Goalkeepers

Ben Foster had his best season in Albion colours. Foster made a number of eye-catching stops which earned the Baggies lots of points across the campaign. He seems to be manaing his injury better and would be considered for an England call-up if he made himself available.

Rating 8.5/10

Boaz Myhill played two and lost two. Failed to force Foster out of Albion's starting XI in the league and featured only against Northampton Town and Derby in the respective cup competiions. Was at fault for Derby's winner, which again caught him out wrong footed. Seems to have put on weight warming up Albion's bench. Time to be replaced.

Rating: 4/10

Defenders

Craig Dawson made 39 appearances for Albion yet questions are still asked about his ability. Has made the right-back position his own but still yearns to move inside. Chipped in with four goals, including a brace against Arsenal.

Rating: 6/10

Gareth McAuley is ageless. G-Mac continues to devy Father Time after making 38 appearances and finding the net an impressive seven times. Made some unfortunate errors which cost Albion points, but still as reliable as ever. Still might struggle for a regular starting berth next term

Rating: 7/10

Allan Nyom may not be the most technically gifted player but that hasn't stopped him becoming a cult hero. His lung bursting runs from full back have caught the eye and has been a solid addition for only £3m. Another who may be looking over his shoulder at pre-season arrivals.

Rating: 7/10

Jonny Evans continues to be Mr Reliable. Another player who had his best season in Albion colours. It's amazing how a 'bigger' club than Albion hasn't come in for him. The club need to tie him down to a longer deal to protect his value.

Rating: 8/10

Brendan Galloway, remember him? The gangly kid who signed from Everton was quickly bombed out by Pulis after a few errors. Started the season as first choice but didn't feature in the league after September. Was eventually sent back to Everton

Rating: 4/10

Marc Wilson arrived in January on loan from Bournemouth. He didn't make an appearance until the start of May but then finished the season as first choice left back. Hasn't done anything to push through a permenant deal.

Rating: 5/10

Kane Wilson was given his solitary appearance of the season against Northampton Town back in August, when he came on and almost scored. Only just turned 17 and looks to be one for the future. Will need to grow 12 inches to feature under Pulis.

Rating: 5/10

Have your say on how Albion's players performed at Baggies Banter.
