Albion have finally secured the services of Chilean international defender, Gonzalo Jara, after the 23-year-old passed his medical and signed a three-year contract, plus a further year in the club’s favour.

The Baggies looked set to sign the versatile player at the start of the month however pulled the deal at the last minute after other targets became available.  Now though, with Albion’s coffers boosted by Jonathan Greening’s exit to Fulham, Jara has completed a £1.4 million deal to The Hawthorns.

The former Colo Colo man can play anywhere across the back-four and also a defensive minded midfielder.  Jara has captained his country and looks set to feature at the 2010 World Cup after helping his country to within touching distance of qualification.

“Gonzalo is an exciting, quick, technical and aggressive player,” said Roberto Di Matteo.

"He's a Chile international and very versatile, which will give me good options.

"He's still young and has a strong desire to achieve.

"Gonzalo wants to go to that next level and prove himself in Europe."

The 5ft. 10 defender, who celebrates his 24th birthday next week, will wear the No.36 shirt.
