Albion sack Irvine

Alan Irvine has this evening been sacked as head coach of West Bromwich Albion.

The Scot, who only took over in the summer, was shown the exit door after the 2-0 defeat to Stoke City - Albion's seventh defeat in their last nine games.

Irvine managed only four league wins in charge of the Baggies and came under fierce criticism from Albion's fans after the defeat at The Brittania Stadium.

Coaches Keith Downing and Rob Kelly have been placed in temporary charge for Albion's game at West Ham on New Year's Day.

The club said in a statement that they expect to make a quick appointment for the club's next head coach.
