West Brom have signed Holland Under-21 international Sherjill MacDonald on loan from AGOVV Apeldoorn until the end of the season. The 22-year-old will join subject to obtaining international clearance and the move may become permanent in the summer. MacDonald, who becomes the club's second signing in the January transfer window after Slovenian international Robert Koren, is not eligible for Sunday's FA Cup derby with Wolves at Molineux.
Mowbray said: "We brought in a young lad with potential to see how he adapts to the English game. It's very unusual for a Dutch player to get international recognition when not playing for a top-flight club. I feel we've pulled off a coup by getting a young player on loan who has created a lot of interest in Holland. Sherjill is quick, has got good technique and a good goals record. Initially, we're not going to put too much pressure on him but if he does well there will hopefully be an opportunity to make the move permanent."
MacDonald is a product of Ajax's youth system and the former Anderlecht player has scored 12 goals in 24 appearances this season. He won his first Under-21 cap in November during the friendly international with England, who included West Brom skipper Curtis Davies in their line-up.
