Appy happy to extend striker's loan

Michael Appleton says Albion didn’t have to think long about extending Kiwi hotshot Chris Wood’s loan spell at neighbours Birmingham City.

Wood has been in sparkling form so far this season scoring seven times in the league for Blues after initially joining on a youth loan.

The New Zealand has now signed a similar deal to keep him at St Andrew’s until January, with ‘Appy’ pleased to see Wood finding his scoring touch and playing regularly.

“We weigh up all the loanees’ situations on a month-to-month basis but at the moment we’re reasonably okay in the forwards’ positions,” said Albion’s No.2.

“We’ve got Peter (Odemwingie) and Shane (Long) in there, we’ve got Simon Cox, we’ve got Marco Fortuné and Somen Tchoyi, so we’ve got five frontmen as it is.

“Chris is coming on and doing well for Birmingham.

“I’m not sure about his first finish on Sunday, playing a one-two off his right foot on to his left foot. I think everyone missed it. I’m sure everyone thought it got a deflection off their defender.

“I think he was embarrassed himself when he scored the first one but his second goal was a very good finish and it will do his confidence the world of good.

“He is playing at a decent level in the Championship and playing down the road, so he hasn’t had to move anywhere.

“If you’re playing and scoring goals you’re enjoying yourself but if he has a dry month, doesn’t score for five or six games and finds himself on the bench, I’m sure he will be desperate to come back.

“If you’re happy, scoring and playing, you’re going to want to hang around for a bit.”
