Baggies told to keep focus

Albion No.2 Keith Downing insists that nobody will be allowed to take their foot off the gas in the remaining eight games of the season.

The Baggies were accused of lethargy against Newcastle as the Geordies raced into a three-goal lead inside 36 minutes at The Hawthorns last week.

Roy Hodgson’s men were much improved after the break, but Downing insists none of the players will be allowed to take their mind off winning matches until the final whistle of the season.

“If we were thinking about drifting then the result on Sunday has shaken everybody and made us ask why are Newcastle in the top six and we are mid-bottom half of the league?” said the assistant manager.

“It’s about individual players, of course, but also about roles and responsibilities and that’s the level we want to get to in the next year or so.

“The work has always been the same, every day.

“Roy’s not one to rest on his laurels – he never has done.

“He takes such seriousness into every training day.

“I’ve not seen any evidence we’ve taken our foot off the pedal.

“I think everyone will single that out because of the result.

“We were obviously better in certain aspects of the game than we were the week before but the result was very disappointing.“But if you look at our Prozone stats, we ran harder than in the Wigan game, we passed more than the Wigan game.

“If anything, technically we didn’t pass as well as we should and also tactically we caught really cold.”
