Northern Ireland international Chris Baird has penned a one-year deal after agreeing a free transfer.

The 32-year-old, who can play anywhere in defence and also as a holding midfielder, has been a long-standing target at The Hawthorns.

He joins from Burnley, where his two-month contract expired at the end of the season having helped the Clarets win automatic promotion.

Baird has nearly a decade of top-flight experience having played for Fulham and Southampton. The Northern Ireland international has also won 65 caps for his country.

Baggies boss Alan Irvine said signing Baird was a no-brainer after doing research on the versatile defender.

“Chris is a player with vast Premier League and international experience who reads the game well and has good positional sense,” said the Scot.

“He can play in several positions and his versatility effectively makes your squad bigger.

“It’s important we have the right characters in the dressing room and Chris is certainly that.

“We have done our homework on him. I have spoken to a lot of different people who have either managed or played with Chris and everyone spoke very, very highly of him both as a player and a person.”
