Boss happy despite another defeat

Individual defensive mistakes again came back to haunt Albion as they outplayed Everton for long spells but still ended up on the wrong side of a 2-0 defeat.

The Baggies made amends for their shocking performance at Craven Cottage with an encouraging start at Goodison. Robert Koren saw an ambition volley fire just wide before Tim Howard was forced into a smart save from a Marc-Antonie Fortuné.

However after Gianni Zuiverloon inexplicably let Tim Cahill, possibly the best player in the air in the Premier League, with a free-header in the 36th minute, and the Baggies failed to clear their lines in the 70th minute allowing Louis Saha to score, all their hard work was undone.

"It was a pretty typical day for us," Mowbray admitted.

"We've found it hard to win games and yet I sit there and enjoy watching my team play.

"It's the way we play, it's the way we coach, it's the way we teach our players.

"I think Everton, as a lot of teams in this league, do the other side of the game - the muck and bullets - better than we do.

"We've got to get to the point where we deal with free-kicks into our box better and make better defensive decisions.

"I was happy enough with the team today.

"We created enough chances to get something from the game.

"Yet, when you make silly defensive decisions in your box, you probably don't deserve to win matches.

"Tim Cahill has scored plenty of goals this year and against better teams than us.

"That's part and parcel of football, it's something that happens.

"But we're disappointed."

Defeat against Everton saw Albion again rooted to the bottom of the table now four points from safety after Middlesbrough's unlikely victory over Liverpool. And although Albion face fifth place Arsenal on Tuesday, Mowbray is refusing to throw in the towel this season.

"We've twice gone through winning runs and we need to hit that sort of form again," he added.

"We've got the likes of Stoke and Bolton at home in back-to-back games and, with total respect to them, if we lose those kind of matches, then I will deal with the questions of how tough it's going to be.

"I think we're more than capable of going on a sequence of victories a couple of times and that's generally what we've got to do.

"We need to gain confidence and belief from winning matches."
