'Brilliant' Baggies delight boss

Roberto Di Matteo says today’s scintillating 3-1 victory over Newcastle makes up for the disappointing Carling Cup exit in midweek.

A brace from Peter Odemwingie and a first half strike from Somen Tchyoi saw Albion beat the Magpies in the league for the first time in 26 years.

Tchyoi, who came in for the suspended Youssouf Mulumbu, opened the scoring when he scored a carbon copy curler as he did last week against Everton. The Baggies dominated from the first whistle to the last with Peter Odemwingie twice firing past Tim Krul before Newcastle’s consolation in the final seconds.

"This absolutely makes up for the disappointment of midweek," Di Matteo said after the final whistle.

"It was a brilliant performance from start to finish.

"We scored some great goals and had the majority of the game.

"There was a little spell in the second half when we were a little bit under pressure.

"But I think we defended that period very well and went on to score the second and third.

"I wouldn't say it was easy.

"We played very well and had to work very hard to win these three points.

"Newcastle defended well and even at 1-0 they had a chance where Scotty did very well to save.

"Apart from that, I don't think we conceded much to them.

"It was a great performance against a good Newcastle team."

He continued: "I couldn't care less where we are in the table at the moment.

"I'm delighted, though, about having 22 points at this stage.

"I won't look at the table until after our last game - that's when it counts."
