Brunt retains captain duties

Chris Brunt will continue his duties as captain this season, new head coach Steve Clarke has confirmed.

Brunt took over the armband during Roberto Di Matteo’s reign after Scott Carson was stripped of the captaincy due to poor form.

New England boss Roy Hodgson decided to stick with Brunt as his captain last season and the Northern Ireland international helped guide the Baggies to their best ever Premier League finish.

Question marks have been raised over where Brunt fits into Clarke’s preferred 4-3-3 formation, but the new boss insists he has no intention of appointing a new captain – signalling a possible central midfield spot for the former Sheffield Wednesday man.

“I haven’t seen any reason to change the captaincy and I said that quite early on when I came in,” Clarke said.
