England international Scott Carson has apologised for his dismissal for violent conduct against Cardiff admitting he deeply regrets the incident.  The Baggies trailed Cardiff by a single goal before the skipper’s moment of madness effectively ended any chance of a comeback against the Bluebirds.

Carson, who only took the role of captain at the start of the season, is now set to serve an automatic three-match ban following his red card with the stopper admitting his frustrations got the better of him.

"I'm captain of the team, a role I take very seriously, and I shouldn't have reacted in the way I did,” said the former Leeds and Liverpool ‘keeper.

"It was a really frustrating night and that came to the fore with my red card.

"A cross came over and I got caught by their player, who got nowhere near the ball.

"I should have just let it go and I'm disappointed in myself for getting involved.

"Having said that, I believe I was provoked and am disappointed in the way a fellow professional reacted.

"But I apologise to the players, the supporters and everyone connected with the club for the fact I was sent off and left us a man short.

"It was completely out of character for me to be involved in anything like that.

"The fact it also led to a penalty just made it worse.

"Having three games out suspended is going to be pretty hard to take and I'm sorry that I won't be involved against QPR, Blackpool and Peterborough."

Albion's goalkeeping coach Dean Kiely is now set to deputise between the posts with Carson sure Roberto Di Matteo's men will be in safe hands.

"I don't like missing a minute of football - never mind three games - but Dean will come in and do a great job for the team, just like he always does," Carson continued.

"We just need to put the whole thing behind us now because Tuesday was a nightmare from start to finish."
