Carson: Complacency cost us

Scott Carson believes a level of complacency was to blame for Albion’s first defeat of the season at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The Baggies could’ve equalled a club record nine games without defeat against the Eagles but were brought back to earth by Neil Warnock’s men.  Now, the Albion skipper is insisting his team-mates keep their foot on the gas after slipping to second in the division.

“The run was obviously going to end sometime but we didn't expect it to be on Saturday," the England international said.

"We knew it would be a tough game but, like everyone else, we didn't expect to lose it.

"They gave us a tough game but we never got going from the first whistle and when you let your foot of the gas in this league you get what you deserve.

"We just never clicked.

"Maybe we were a bit complacent and the performance just wasn't there.

"They made it really difficult for us but it's just one of those days that we have to put behind us and move on.

"It could be a blessing in disguise because it might give us the kick up the backside that we maybe needed.

"We let our foot off the gas and we were punished, so we have learned we can't do it.

"There was a lot of hype about the 5-0 and we gave a great performance at Middlesbrough, and everybody was saying 'West Brom are going to win the league with no problems'.

"But it's a tough league.

"Teams will come to The Hawthorns and make it difficult for us, and stop us playing football.

"Crystal Palace certainly did that and we never made the breakthrough - and paid the price.

"But the result on Saturday put things back into perspective and it could be a blessing in disguise.

"We've got to put it behind us and move on.

"We've got two tough games coming up and we need to bounce back quickly."
