Cox bides his time

Simon Cox has insisted he’ll wait patiently for his chance at The Hawthorns after scoring for the reserves last night.  The £1.9 million summer signing has started only two league games for the Baggies since his switch from Swindon Town finding himself behind Roman Bednar, Luke Moore and Chris Wood in Roberto Di Matteo’s thoughts.

However with Albion scoring only four times in their last seven games calls have been made for Cox to be given a run of games after finding the net 32 times last season in League One.  The 22-year-old, who arrived with a niggling ankle injury, admits he didn’t expect to be first choice after his step-up into the Championship but revealed he’s more than ready to test himself against the likes of Coventry and Watford.

“It is always frustrating,” he admitted.

“I don’t like not playing but when you step up that extra level with bigger squad and better players you are always going to have to wait your turn and I am happy to do so..

“The gaffer picks the team every week and he sees what people in front of me are doing and he sees what I do every day in training.

“And if he thinks that the people in front of me are the best people for the job he will pick them.

“I’m not going to bang on his door every time I don’t play because I am not happy because he should know I am not happy and that’s it.”

Despite making five league appearances for Albion, Cox has insisted his confidence has not been affected by the lack of first-team opportunities but did admit his disappointment.

“I am still a confident boy every day in training and around the training ground,” he continued.

“But you want to play every time. Every time there is a three o’clock kick-off or a night game you want to be out on the pitch and show what you can do.

“But I get confidence from just playing and if I can get a run of games I will be happy and that will be good.

“I have settled in quite well and I have a bit of fun and laughter around the training ground so I am enjoying it.

“To cap it all off I would like to start playing but that’s not down to me, it’s down to the manager.”
