Dependable Joe

Albion No.2 Michael Appleton says Albion fans should be prepared to see if different Joe Mattock – if he can push his way into the first team.

The former Leicester defender looked set to be heading out of The Hawthorns after being shipped out on loan to Sheffield United last season.

But, after Marek Cech’s departure, Mattock has been given a new lease of life under Roy Hodgson and is providing competition to first choice Nicky Shorey.

"I don't think we have to hope he will push Nicky because I think it has already happened in the last two or three weeks or so," said Appleton.

"Joe has come in and trained ever so well so I'm sure he sees an opportunity to put on the pressure you would want from any member of your squad, whatever their position.

"There's a healthy competition now.

"Nicky has got that spot and he is a steady Eddie, you know what you get from him and what you don't get from him, and at the moment Joe is doing everything he can in training.

"He is training well, working hard and hoping for an opportunity as and when it happens."

Mattock will be part of Albion’s travelling squad to Swansea City this weekend. However, the Baggies will be without both Gabriel Tamas (suspension) and Zoltan Gera (injury). Captain Chris Brunt is also a major doubt with a knee injury sustained in training.
