Roberto Di Matteo has revealed he hopes to improve his Albion squad when the transfer window opens in January.  The Baggies boss has made an impressive start to his tenure at the club leading the Albion to the summit of the Championship during his first 17 league games in charge.

Albion chairman Jeremy Peace has repeatedly insisted the Baggies do their business during the summer transfer window however Di Matteo is hoping to boost his options in the New Year.  And while the Italian is pleased with his current players, he insists the Baggies must build on their impressive start if they’re to achieve promotion.

“The minute that you think you are too good for this division, you are going to get punished," Di Matteo insisted.

"I am not thinking about next season.

"I have already asked the club for money to spend in January, but let's wait and see what happens first.

"We have got a very good scouting system and we are working on a number of targets, but we will see how we are in January, which is still seven games away.

"It is still too early to be looking at players that can play at a higher level. If we get promoted, then you can start planning for that but until then I will not plan for next year."

Di Matteo continued: "I might not even be here. In a manager's job you lose four games and it's bye-bye.

"It is the wrong time to talk about next season. But the chairman is very supportive, he gives everything he can to advance the possibilities of this club."
