Roberto Di Matteo believes his side are heading in the right direction after seeing the Baggies come from a goal down to extend their unbeaten start to the season.

After a sluggish opening Albion found themselves a goal down when Jamie Mackie capitalised on an error by Shelton Martis to squeeze a shot past Scott Carson in the 12th minute.

Martis made up for his earlier error in the 34th minute after Plymouth ‘keeper Romain Larrieu misjudged a Graham Dorrans corner to present the centre-half with a tap-in under the crossbar.

Minutes before half-time Albion took the lead following a 20-yard thunderbolt from Marek Cech.  After picking up a pass from Roman Bednar on the edge of the area, Cech let fly to score an impressive first goal in Albion colours.

After the break Albion pressed for a third with Cech unlucky not to score a second after an effort was ruled offside.  However with just four minutes to play, the Slovakian got his name on the scoresheet again following a guided header from a Graham Dorrans cross.

"It was hard work today," said Di Matteo.

"In the end, the result might have looked comfortable - but it was a hard game.

"We need to give credit to the opposition because they came out of the blocks very well and played well in the first 25 minutes.

"We had to change a few things around and we got the equaliser before half-time, which was important, and managed to get a second goal before half-time, which was even more important.

"In the second half, we were much more in control of the game.

"We'll enjoy being top of the league for now, and being unbeaten at least until Tuesday."

Albion have smashed ten goals in their last four league outings and Di Matteo is delighted the goals are being shared around the team.

"I put the goals down to having good players in the team," he added.

"We have our philosophy.

"The fact everyone is scoring in the team makes us unpredictable and difficult for the other team to mark us.

"We don't just have one goalscorer that gives us 30 goals.

"If you mark the striker and he doesn't score, we can score from anywhere.

"I believe this team has had that in the past as well.

"We are going in the right direction."
