Di Matteo pleased with three points

Roberto Di Matteo was pleased to see his player’s fighting spirit once again after Albion clung on to extend their unbeaten start to the season.

Luke Moore’s first goals of the season in the 3rd and 34th minute gave the visitors a great start with Chris Brunt extending the advantage four minutes before the break.

However, Peterborough gave themselves a lifeline before half-time when Craig Mackail-Smith snuck behind Joe Mattock to head home.  The hosts put pressure on the Baggies after the break and were rewarded when Aaron McLean poked home a cross in the 53rd minute.

The Posh thought they’d levelled the scores when Mackail-Smith bundled the ball home but were denied by the referee’s whistle after a foul on Scott Carson.

As the hosts pushed forward, the Baggies always looked a threat on the break with Luke Moore and debutant Jerome Thomas both coming close to extending Albion’s lead.  Scott Carson had one final save to make in the fourth minute of injury time with Graham Dorrans receiving his marching orders moments later after a second bookable offence.

"We knew the game was on at half-time," Di Matteo said after the final whistle.

"We huffed and puffed and tried very hard in the second-half.

"We gave an easy goal away at the start of the second-half but otherwise I thought we were very solid.

"In the first-half I thought we were exceptionally good and I don't think they came near us.

"The goal just before half-time didn't help and, with them playing at home, they tried everything in the second half.

"I was very pleased with our performance in the first half."
