Roberto Di Matteo hailed Albion’s brilliant performance against Sheffield Wednesday after the Baggies again scored four goals and this week managed to keep a clean sheet.

The Baggies bossed the game from the first whistle to last with a Simon Cox brace and a Jerome Thomas curler giving the visitors an unassailable 3-0 lead at half-time.  Chris Brunt wrapped up the victory after the break with a goal against his former team with Roberto Di Matteo choosing to ignore his attacking threats when picking his own man-of-the-match against the Owls.

"I would pick my two centre-halves as men of the match today - they were brilliant," said Di Matteo.

"It's normal for everyone to focus their attentions on the offensive players because they're the ones who score.

"But I looked at the centre-halves today, who were outstanding.

"They were so strong.

"Abou and Jonas defended everything that came towards them.

"They were brilliant."

The victory over Brian Laws’ men extended Albion’s position in the top two with the Baggies now six points ahead of third place Leicester City and only two behind leaders Newcastle United.

Albion’s foursome display against Wednesday took their goal tally for the season to 39 and made them the top scorers in all professional leagues in England.  The shut out at the other end also gave the Baggies the second best defensive record in the Championship.

"I'm very pleased today," he added

"We were looking for three points and I believe if you play well over the long term you get results.

"We put in another great performance, controlled the game and dictated the tempo.

"We scored three goals and finished off the game in the first-half.

"We controlled the game fantastically in the second half and attacked at the right times.

"It was a really mature display.

"Winning 1-0 is good enough for me, but everybody seems to be scoring in our team and that's good.

"We create chances and I also thought there was a clear penalty in the first half when Cox was brought down."
