Fourth place beyond boss' expectations

Albion boss Roberto Di Matteo admits the Baggies’ league position is beyond his wildest dreams!

The Baggies are currently fourth in the Barclays Premier League following yesterday’s 2-1 victory against Fulham.

Goals from Youssouf Mulumbu and Marc-Antonie Fortune saw the Baggies again come from behind after former fans’ favourite Zoltan Gera saw his shot rebound off the post then roll in off Scott Carson.

The victory takes Albion to an impressive 15 points from just nine games – which included tricky away fixtures at Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United.

Di Matteo admits he doesn’t know how long Albion can extend their unbeaten record, but praised the hard work of his players for giving the Baggies a dream start.

"Yes, this is beyond my expectations," he admitted.

"But the way we're playing and the way the team is performing means we deserve the points we have.

"We're delighted about the points we have at this stage.

"I have absolutely no idea if we can keep it going!

"We'll just take it game by game and try to improve - not conceding a goal first for a change would be nice.

"We'll see at the end of the season where we stand."

The former MK Dons chief has now overseen Albion’s best start to a Premier League season. But he insists all credit must go to the players’ dedication on the training pitch and on matchdays.

"There is no secret," he added.

"It's hard work.

"The players dedicate a lot of their time to training and transfer it onto the pitch on Saturdays.

"We work hard as a team and we enjoy what we do.

"We try to play football and we believe that is the way to win games.

"It's quite simple, really.

"You need a combination of many factors.

"Today, we didn't concede too many chances to Fulham and, at times, put them under enormous pressure.

"We created plenty of chances to win the game and I think we were worthy winners.

"I thought great moves led to both goals.

"There was good link-up play and players moving well inside.

"I also think it was a great game of football."
