Costa Rica international Cristian Gamboa has completed his transfer from Rosenborg to the Baggies after finally receiving his work permit this afternoon.

Gamboa’s £2m deal from Rosenborg was initially in the balance after the FA rejected a work permit for the 24-year-old.

But after an appeal from Albion this afternoon, Gamboa got the green light to start his Hawthorns career.

“It would have been amazing if Cristian had not been granted a work permit and we’re obviously satisfied with today’s outcome,” said Alan Irvine.

“Cristian is a player I was extremely impressed by during the World Cup.

"We faced stiff competition from other Premier League clubs for his services but we've managed to convince Cristian that West Bromwich Albion is the best club for him to join.

"Cristian is a quick, aggressive defender with good energy levels. He gets up and down the pitch really well and we believe he will continue to improve."

Gamboa joins Albion on the same day that fellow World Cup star Jason Davidson joined the club.

He will compete with fellow new signings Andre Wisdom, Chris Baird and Craig Gardner for the right-back position.
