Holland Under-21 international defender Gianni Zuiverloon has laid praise at the door of Abdoulaye Meite after the Ivory Coast centre-half helped stop Albion’s mini-slump.  The former Marseille and Bolton defender made his first league start in six months for the Baggies in a much improved backline.

The respectable draw at Deepdale ended Albion’s run of consecutive Championship defeats with Albion looking far more solid in defence after losses against Crystal Palace and Barnsley.

“I thought he did very well," Zuiverloon said when quizzed on Meite’s performance.

"You can tell by our clean-sheet that he did well.

"He won some important headers, he was strong and it was like he hadn't been out of the team.

"He can be a very important player for us.

"He's a good player and we could use him more this year - he's strong, big, he's aggressive and can be a good player for us.

"But so can Shelton and Leon, so we have alternatives."
