Hard work pays off for Cox

Simon Cox believes the hard work and patience showed on the training ground has finally paid off after he scored his first league goal and collected the man of the match award against Watford.

The 22-year-old hotshot scored 32 goals for Swindon last term and earned a £1.9 million switch in the summer to The Hawthorns.  However after picking up a pre-season ankle injury, Cox has had to bide his time to force his way into Roberto Di Matteo’s thoughts and first-team selection.

"It was nice to be out there playing," said Cox

"It's been hard but I have just had to work hard and bide my time - and I was happy to do so.

"But when you feel you've got a point to prove, it's nice just to get out there and play.

"If you can score a goal it's even better.

"I scored in the reserves game last Monday and I was full of confidence.

"I've been working hard in training and trying to score as many goals as I can and when you get your chance you have to take it.

"I never really put any pressure on myself because if I put pressure on myself I don't play well.

"I went out to relax and enjoy the whole occasion on Saturday and hopefully get on the scoresheet - which I did in the end.

"I thought my all-round game was pretty decent.

"Getting a goal is the icing on the cake.

"Confidence is high now and I just hope I can build on that goal."
