Hodgson happy with 'lucky' win

Roy Hodgson savoured his first return to Anfield with three points after watching a resolute Albion smash and grab raid.

Albion were forced to defend for long periods as Liverpool bombarded the Baggies’ goal. But Liverpool could not find a way past Ben Foster as lady luck shined on Albion.

The back four of Billy Jones, Jonas Olsson, Gareth McAuley and Liam Ridgewell stood firm before Peter Odemwingie struck - 45 years after Jeff Astle had done - to record a first win at Anfield in four decades.

"The greatest satisfaction I have today is the effort the team put in," said Albion’s boss "We had to ride our luck sometimes and it was a massive rearguard action.

"To be fair they piled on the pressure in the second half and it was a tough rearguard action and the players perhaps deserved a bit of luck.

"It was a hardworking, really gritty performance and I have got to be proud of the team.

"It was a great day today as it is unusual for West Brom to beat Liverpool home or away, so it is a special occasion.

"I am not making any bones about it, it was a lucky win.

"Liverpool were clearly the better team and created the better chances and were very unlucky to lose the game, but if I lament Liverpool's misfortunate I am happy with our good fortune and happy with the way the team fought to the bitter end for the victory."
