Irvine: Comeback keeps momentum going

Alan Irvine praised his side after a late comeback saw the Baggies progress to the next round of the Carling Cup.

Brown Ideye scored his first Albion goal in the 15th minute to give the Baggies the lead against Hull. But the Tigers fought back with goals from Thomas Ince and Robbie Brady either side of half time.

The Baggies pressed for an equaliser after the break and Albion were rewarded with an equaliser in the 86th minute when Gareth McAuley volleyed home. It got better for Albion a minute later when Saido Berahino collected debutant Silvestre Varela’s smart pass to fire home from an acute angle.

The victory means Albion will now travel to Championship outfit Bournemouth in the next round.

“It’s a difficult tie,” said Irvine minutes after the draw was made.

“But it’s a tie I would have settled for at the start of the night because it would have meant we were in the last 16.

“Bournemouth are a good side who play good football and they will be really looking forward to us going down there.

“But so are we – this keeps a bit of momentum going and the feel-good factor within the club as well.

“This is a competition that is dear to me as I was lucky enough to play in the 1984 final and I would love to go all the way.

“But we’re not getting ahead of ourselves. We are a long way from there yet. It was just nice to get what I consider were our just rewards from this game.”
