Irvine questions 'soft penalty'

Alan Irvine questioned the decision to award Queens Park Rangers a spot kick during Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to the Hoops.

The Baggies were coasting after goals from Joleon Lescott and Silvestre Varela had put the hosts 2-0 up inside 20 minutes.

But referee Craig Pawson awarded a penalty for an alleged pull in the area by James Morrison which gave the hosts a vital lifeline.

Charlie Austin fired the first of his three goals on the afternoon to put Rangers on the same amount of points as the Baggies going into Christmas.

“It was a soft penalty. The referee had a decision to make - I'm not sure they get given every week, but it was this week,” said the Scot.

"If it was for us I'd still be thinking it would be soft but I'd be delighted to take it as I'm sure Harry Redknapp will be.

"That was a turning point, as was the save by Rob Green just before that."
