Irvine ready for 'important' cup game

Alan Irvine will pick a strong side for tonight’s Carling Cup game at Bournemouth having watched the Cherries humiliate West Midlands rivals Birmingham at the weekend.

Eddie Howe’s men thrashed managerless Birmingham 8-0 at St Andrews on Saturday and go into tonight’s fixture as the bookies’ favourites.

Irvine is keen to avoid a similar result and has indicated there won’t be too many changes to the side which started in the Premier League on Saturday.

"It's a really important game for us," the Scot said.

"We want to get a good result and progress to the next round. We will put out a team of first team players.

"As head coach I have to manage the whole squad and players who haven't been playing need to have a platform to impress.

"It's very important that any players who are in the first team squad are ready to play in the Premier League if called upon."

The Baggies are expected to be without Jonas Olsson, Claudio Yacob and Silvestre Varela to tonight’s game.
