McAuley revels in Chelsea goal

Gareth McAuley has admitted his goal against Chelsea was a special strike – both personally and professionally.

The defender’s 82nd minute close-range effort secured Albion’s third straight Premier League win – and his first ever goal at The Hawthorns for the Baggies.

The Northern Ireland international is more accustomed to protecting Albion’s goal at the other end of the pitch rather than scoring. But the giant defender’s strike earned Albion their first win against Chelsea in more than three decades.

"Any goal is a big goal but it's special to score for the club at The Hawthorns and very nice to get a winner, especially against a club like Chelsea, who are knocking on the door of the Champions League," he said.

"It's a massive three points for us and it builds great confidence in the team to carry on now for the rest of the season.

"We're on the crest of a wave and confidence is high, and we just want to keep on that now.

"It was a great performance from the team and it was nice to get the clean sheet, but to get three points against a team like Chelsea was special."
