Megs offered to quit, twice

Megson made the revelation in one of this morning's tabloids, stating that he would almost certainly have left the club had former chairman Paul Thompspn left first.

"It was strange, especially when you consider we had won promotion and I had been voted the First Division's Manager of the Year.

"I was told not to say anything. But I'm happy to say I am in charge of my own domain again and free from distractions."

Sparks flew when Thompson claimed that the club's scouting system was not good enough, and would be run by the board of directors.

The former chairman also reportedly decided that he, and he alone, would decide which players would be retained at the Hawthorns over the summer.

"I've heard it said that I ousted the chairman. Megalomaniac and egomaniac were words I heard used by people who said I wanted to run the club," added Megson.

"The chairman runs a club, not the manager and I don't know one manager who has ousted his chairman — I certainly didn't."
