Mel: We sat too deep

Pepe Mel had no answer as to why Albion again let two points slip following yesterday’s 3-3 draw with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Baggies raced into a three goal lead after strikes from Matej Vydra, Chris Brunt and Stephane Sessegnon.

But after Jonas Olsson’s own goal on the stroke of half time, Spurs came back into the game in the second half and equalised in the 94th minute through Christian Eriksen.

It was the second consecutive home game where the Baggies have conceded in injury time to lose three valuable points.

Mel admitted afterwards that his troops were not instructed to play so deep and invite pressure from Spurs after the break.

“It is the third time this has happened, because it also happened at Villa, and while we work very hard to go and score the goals, we have to work equally hard to make sure we don’t concede the goals.

“We need to work on our defensive ideas to clear up these errors.

“Yes, I agree we sat back too much – but no-one had been given any orders to play further back.

“Tottenham played very well and, I’m not sure why, but we kept falling and falling further back.”
