Kevin Phillips, the Championship's December Powerade Player-of-the-Month today received his award and admitted the accolade was the 'icing on the cake' after returning from a serious knee injury.

The 34-year-old striker returned from a six-week lay-off as a scoring substitute against Charlton Athletic to begin a sequence of five goals in just four games. Phillip's fine form has even surprised himself as he has risen to the top of the division's goal scoring chart bagging 15 goals already.

"It's always nice to keep winning awards, especially when I'm going to be 35 this year," Phillips beamed.

"I'm delighted.

"I said after my first game back from injury I was just delighted to be playing again.

"But to have the month I did in December, and score the goals I did, was tremendous.

"I'm back to full fitness now which is great.

"It's an important time now for every club in the league, especially for us sitting top with some tough matches coming up.

"We need to keep everyone fit and hopefully I'll continue scoring goals and stay injury free.

"We're all looking forward to the challenge."
