Albion new boy Paul Scharner has revealed the chance to prove himself as a Premier League midfielder played a major part in his decision to join the Baggies.

The versatile former Wigan man played everywhere apart from left-back for the Latics. But he said the opportunity to secure a midfield berth at the Baggies made his mind up for him.

Scharner was in the stands to watch Albion’s defeat against Liverpool and saw encouraging signs from the sidelines.

"I saw the game at Liverpool and they did really well there,” said the 30-year-old.

"It was an undeserved defeat.

"There is a lot of potential and I'm sure we can stay in the league.

"The style of play here is beautiful and what I was looking for was to get into a team that plays football.

"That's what I've missed over the last couple of years.

"Now it's up to me because I'm signed as a midfielder and this is my best position.

"I'm looking forward to it.

"I've signed as a central midfielder and that is why I joined West Bromwich because I want to take the chance to show everyone this is the right position for me."

The Austrian international’s main priority this season will be to help the Baggies secure Premier League status this year after doing so at Wigan in his first season at the DW Stadium.

“"I remember West Brom is called a yo-yo team - up and down between the Premier League and the Championship,” he continued.

"My first target is to help establish West Brom in the Premier League and stay there for a long time.

"The main target for Wigan was to stay in the Premier League and establish ourselves in the Premier League.

"We did a good job in the past but now I have a new target at a new club."
