Quality shines through for Mowbray

Tony Mowbray put the 3-1 victory over Hull down to Albion's cutting edge over their promotion rivals from Humberside. Kevin Phillips extended his lead in the scoring charts after only 2 minutes when he slid a Chris Brunt cross under Hull 'keeper Boaz Myhill. Further strikes from James Morrison and Roman Bednar secured the points for the Baggies who saw Paul Robinson see red for the second time this season after two bookable offences.

"
The team worked extremely hard today," Mowbray said.

"We always looked a threat.

"But it wasn't a game where we totally dominated and controlled it.

"You can see why Hull are having such a decent season.

"But sometimes that extra cutting edge is what gets you the points and that proved to be the case today.

"We've got a lot of work to do on resilience out of possession.

"Teams create too many chances against us and put balls into our box too often.

"We've got lots to work on - but there are plenty of positives."

Albion's three goals at The KC Stadium in front of the TV cameras extended their scoring run to 16 goals in four games on Sky. However chances for Ishmael Miller and Paul Robinson could have extended Albion's lead before the defender received his disputed second yellow card. The team's resilience thereafter to hold on to the points also brought praise from the Albion boss who admitted his pleasure at securing a first win in four away games.

"It was a game that had different periods and swung," Mowbray added.

"I thought we were on top in the first half to the point where we were comfortable, knowing we could break away and be a real threat.

"We maybe should have scored a third and been 3-0 up at the break.

"But you've got to give Hull lots and lots of credit for sticking at it, being very competitive and making it very difficult for us.

"They put lots of balls into our box and asked us lots of questions.

"The officials played a part today and maybe that was created by the atmosphere in the stadium.

"All credit to the people of Hull who came out and made it a passionate affair.

"The application was good after we went down to ten men.

"It's always hard when it's ten versus 11. They were driving forward.

"But it was pleasing to see the resilience of the side and to have a cutting edge to ultimately score the third goal.

"It's nice to have the option of Roman coming off the bench in place of Miller or Phillips.

"They're all scoring goals regularly."
