Albion were well beaten by Man City with the visitors scoring twice in each half to leave the Baggies only three points above the drop zone.

The disharmony among fans was emphasised and vocalised by the loud cheers that accompanied the departures of Albion skipper Darren Fletcher and Jonas Olsson early into the second half.

It's difficult to fathom quite what is behind the drastic slump in form of and sway in public opinion towards the reigning Fans' Player of the Year.

Fletcher has been poor this season, of that there is no question.

But to say the reception when he left the pitch was harsh would be an understatement.

Two clinical Sergio Aguero goals in the space of nine first-half minutes put the visitors in charge before the brilliant Ilkay Gundogan wrapped things up with two of his own in the last 11 minutes.

City's 10th straight win over the Baggies ended their six-match winless streak - Guardiola's longest in his managerial career.

Tactically, Pulis got it wrong to start with. City have proved vulnerable in recent weeks to a high-intensity, high-pressing game. Celtic and Southampton found weaknesses at the back, and yet Albion ignored that blueprint in the first half.

West Brom looked much improved now that Jonny Evans had moved back into defence from midfield and Chris Brunt and Morrison were pulling the strings at the heart of the team. For the first time in the match, they began to put City under pressure. Their chance to get back into the game came 19 minutes from the end. Evans showed great composure to play the ball out from the back under pressure and freed James McClean with a clever through ball.

McClean measured his cross perfectly, leaving Rondon with a tap-in but the Venezuela forward miscued his shot and it dribbled wide.

That miss sealed West Brom’s fate.

As for the first half, you only needed to hear the West Brom fans celebrating the fleeting moments when they were in possession to gauge their feelings on how it had gone. “We’ve got the ball, we’ve got the ball,” they sang for the brief periods it was theirs.

Pulis swerved the post-match press conference so it was up to his assistant Dave Kemp to explain that the plan simply had not worked in the first half because of the quality of City’s team. “They haven’t come from the job centre these [City] players,” he said, “they have paid a lot of money for these people and they are very good.”

Where was Pulis? “Probably hanging himself somewhere,” Kemp replied cheerfully and while there were some brighter moments in the second half their best chance was when James McClean got down the left and crossed for Salomon Rondon who did not adjust to a deflection into time to finish. Kevin De Bruyne came on to see out the game for City and on 79 minutes Aguero created the third.
