Nacer Chadli earlier looked to have put them on course for a third Premier League win of the season when he opened the scoring ten minutes before the break.

But Albion failed to take advantage of some promising attacking positions and were made to pay when Van Aanholt struck late.

Both Darren Fletcher and Salomon Rondon were denied by home keeper Jordan Pickford, while boss Tony Pulis will feel a little more composure in the final third might have earned his side the second goal to kill the game off.

West Bromwich Albion were left to rue a clutch of missed chances as Patrick Van Aanholt’s late goal rescued a point for struggling Sunderland.

In a game that was always going to be tight, Nacer Chadli’s quality first half finish looked like it would make all the difference.

But Van Aanholt replied seven minutes from time after the Baggies had passed up a succession of openings.

Nacer Chadli had netted his third goal since a £13million summer move from Tottenham to hand West Brom the lead 10 minutes before the break.

And boss Tony Pulis believes his Baggies side should have won easily. He said: “We needed a second goal. We had 21 crosses and 18 shots.

“We’re desperately disappointed not to have won. We’re not doing too badly. It’s progress. Although it’s slow, it’s progress.”
