Skipper reveals penalty pressure

Chris Brunt has revealed the pressure he was under after putting himself forward to take the two penalties against Liverpool.

Leading scorer Peter Odemwingie had been the Baggies’ regular penalty taker this season but was demoted after his penalty miss against Manchester United on New Year’s Day.

Albion’s captain admits he didn’t think about the first spot-kick too much, but realised the importance of his second penalty only minutes before full time.

“With the first one, I was just thinking ‘don't miss’,” said the Northern Ireland international.

“I had known for a few weeks I would take a penalty if we got one and I was always going to put my foot through it.

“Pepe Reina dived and it went straight down the middle.

“I had a bit more time to think about the second one so there was a bit more pressure on it.

“But I picked a side and hit it well.

“As soon as I hit it, I knew it would take some saving.

“I was delighted to see it hit the net!”

Brunt reserved praise for Odemwingie after the pacy striker was felled first by Sotirios Kyrgiakos and then by Pepe Reina after rounding the ‘keeper on an afternoon when he terrorised the Reds’ defence.

“Peter was absolutely brilliant and deserved a goal.

“When he was going in for the second penalty, I was screaming at him to shoot - but that's Peter!

“He's a laid-back lad and doesn't really panic.

“He was fantastic all day and caused them all sorts of problems.

“When you've got a player like that running in behind teams, it must be very difficult to defend against.

“He created space for the likes of myself, Jerome, Coxy and Marco to get on the ball.

“He is a big presence for us when he is on form and in the last few weeks he has been fantastic.”
