Arsene Wenger has given Tony Mowbray his full backing for sticking to his footballing principles as they prepare to face each other on the touchline this evening (KO 19.45).

Mowbray has come in for criticism from certain parts of the media this term for his attack-minded brand of flowing football. However the highly respected Arsenal chief insists he'd do exactly the same if he was in the Baggies' hot-seat.

"I think Tony Mowbray is doing a great job at West Brom," said Wenger.

"There is a fine line between succeeding and not succeeding but in the longer term any manager with a positive philosophy will have success.

"I believe I would have the same principles if I were in charge of a similar club, yes.

"If you want your players to improve you have to try and play.

"The players need to improve and feel like they have the chance to improve.

"That is why I am convinced it is the right attitude."

Wenger also reserved praise for the way that Mowbray is helping loan-star, Jay Simpson, to adjust to the rigours of life in the Premier League as he keeps a close eye on the 20-year-old's progress at The Hawthorns.

"It's difficult to say exactly how good Jay could be, because he is still only 20 years old," he added.

"Jay has personality, determination, talent and a great attitude.

"I rate him highly, personally.

"Jay's loan spell at West Brom can give him the needed confidence and experience.

"It will also show everybody that he has the needed quality to play in the Premier League.

"You toughen up and he plays every week in an environment where every point becomes vital, which is massive for him."
