Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo admitted his disappointment at seeing Albion finish with only a point against Champions League outfit Tottenham Hotspur.

After a lacklustre first half where Luka Modric gave the visitors the lead in the 27th minute, Chris Brunt’s 50th league goal gave Albion an unlikely lifeline just before half time.

The second half was a different story for Roberto Di Matteo’s men with Spurs’ stopper Carlo Cudicini making a number of saves to salvage a point for the visitors.

“We had to work hard to get a positive result,” the Italian said.

“Right now we feel a little bit disappointed that we didn’t win the game because of the chances we created in the second half.

“Towards the end, we had some very good chances to win it.

“But, after a good night’s sleep, we’ll probably take a point against a good Spurs team.

“In the last couple of games, we have shown a great deal of character.

“The players reacted fantastically after going 1-0 down today.

“They showed great determination to get back into the game.

“I was quite pleased to go in at half-time 1-1 because I couldn't see us scoring in the first half.

“It was great from the players that they managed to do that.”

Robbie also reserved praise for debutant Paul Scharner who impressed during this 73 minute appearance before being replaced by Steven Reid.

“I thought Paul was tremendous during the time he was on the pitch,” said Di Matteo.

“It was a difficult task for him in his first game.

“He has only been with us for 12 days.

“But he gave everything in the minutes he was on the pitch and he will only get better the more games he gets under his belt.

“I knew before the game he didn't quite have 90 minutes in his legs yet.

“But I thought he made a big contribution to our performance today.”
