Baggies boss Alan Pardew says Albion's slow start cost them a place in the FA Cup Quarter Finals.

After Albion's disasterous trip to Barcelona, the Baggies were one behind inside 11 minutes when Wesley Hoedt was left unmarked from a corner to volley home.

Albion were slightly better after the break but were two down when the Saints broke and Dusan Tadic chipped Ben Foster.

Salomon Rondon scored a stunning volley to pull a goal back. But despite putting the Saints under pressure, the Baggies were unable to force a reply.

“We started a bit nervously but there was a lot of good energy on the pitch and in the second half I thought we deserved something,” he said.

“It’s a shame for our fans because I thought they were really good for us today.

“We really appreciate that and we’re going to need them over these next 11 games.

“Our goal was a great goal, a fantastic goal. We needed it really, it was a confidence booster for us all.

“That gave us a bit of a grandstand finish, but unfortunately we couldn’t squeeze another goal in during that period."
