Clarke pleased with Goodison point

Steve Clarke claimed Albion’s season starts now after watching his side earn a battling point at Goodison Park.

Albion defended resolutely and had both Ben Foster and debutant Luke Daniels to thank for earning a share of the points.

Clarke made just one change to the side which disappointed against Southampton last weekend with Markus Rosenberg replacing the absent Nicolas Anelka.

The Baggies started with a 4-4-2 formation but quickly switched to a familiar 4-5-1 shape after Everton started quickly in Roberto Martinez’s first home game in charge.

But after Foster had made a couple of important saves, Albion came into the game with James Morrison unfortunate to see his looping volley go over the crossbar.

Morrison came close again in the second half as Albion countered when possible. But the Baggies were dealt a blow in the 77th minute when Ben Foster was forced off with a foot injury and replaced by Luke Daniels – making his first appearance in Albion colours in 9 years!

Daniels capped a first game with a fine late save from Seamus Coleman and was thankful as the woodwork came to Albion’s savour twice late on.

“I think our season started today,” Steve Clarke said.

“It was a hard-earned point and I think deserved.

“It shows what we’re all about as a team and maybe we didn’t show that quite as much last week, which was a disappointing weekend for everyone.

“We were determined to come here and do what we didn’t do last week.

“I think you saw the effort on the pitch and the result is a good one for us.

“We came here last season and got beaten, I watched Everton's first home game last season, against the team that became champions - Manchester United - and Everton won.

"So, it's a difficult place to come.

“It was a game where we did defend well but at the right moments we broke well and showed we are a threat going forward.

“And maybe, with better use of the ball in the second half, we could have made more of the opportunities we had on the counter-attack.

“We’ve bounced back today.”
