Jason Koumas has been named the best player outside the Premiership - but admits he feared for his West Brom career at the start of the season.Midfielder Koumas has been instrumental in the Baggies' attempt to win promotion from the Championship this term, but it seemed last summer as though he would never play again for the club after a dispute over a proposed move to Cardiff, with whom he spent the 2005/06 campaign on loan. But Koumas was handed a second chance at The Hawthorns, and he seized it with both hands to claim the top spot in FourFourTwo magazine's annual awards on Sunday evening to determine the best 50 players outside the top flight.
"It is a wonderful honour. It has come as a surprise, but it is great that people inside the game have voted for me. It is even more pleasing that the West Brom fans value my worth in the team. It could have gone the other way, but, since I returned to the club in the summer, the fans have really got behind me." said Koumas
Koumas claimed the award ahead of Preston striker David Nugent and Southampton youngster Gareth Bale. Bale's third position in the standings earned him the title of the Best Young Player, although - like Koumas - the Wales international was not present to accept his award at London's Grosvenor House Hotel. Scunthorpe forward Billy Sharp was named League One's best player, with Milton Keynes forward Izale McLeod taking the prize for League Two.
