KP first feared the worst

Kevin Phillips today finished his first full week back full training and revealed his relief at playing again. After badly twisting his knee in the 1-1 home draw against Sheffield Wednesday the prolific striker revealed he initially thought his career to be over.

"I delighted to be back in training after what's been a frustrating month," Super Kev said.

"The knee has responded well.

"It felt good a few days after I did it, but you can't rush these sort of things, especially at my age.

"It's good to be out there running around again because when it first happend, I thought it could potentially have been my season, if not my career, finished.

"I've never, ever felt pain like it when it happend - and I've had some injuries in my career," the Baggies' top scorer revealed.

"I knew in my head it could potentially be a serious one.

"Luckily, it hasn't turned out that way."

The former Villa, Sunderland and Watford hit-man also praised the introduction of Roman Bednar which has taken some of the pressure of both Phillips, and fellow knee injury victim, Ishmael Miller to return.

"That's a bonus for me and Ish because there's not so much pressure to return from injury.

"I'll just take each training day as it comes and make sure I'm 100 per cent when I come back.

Phillip's injury began the start of a freak sequence of knee problems for the Baggies with defender Martin Albrechtsen limping off in the same game followed by midfielder James Morrison and fellow striker Ishmael Miller all joining long-term absentee, Neil Clement on the treatment table. However the five are now battling against each other to see who can reach full fitness first.

"We're all competing against each other to see who can get back the quickest," KP added.

"The fact we've got similar injuries means its easier for the physio as well because we're all doing the same exercises day in, day out."
