Mowbray holding out for a Roman return

Albion boss Tony Mowbray believes Roman Bednar's fine goalscoring form will result in the on-loan forward gaining further international recognition. The 24-year-old striker made his debut 18 months ago during a 20 minute substitute cameo appearance as the Czech Republic lost 3-1 on home turf to Serbia.

But despite scoring an impressive 12 goals in 15 games Bednar has again been overlooked by his international boss Karel Bruckner for the friendly against Poland tomorrow. The 6ft 3in striker's case for a recall has been halted by his fellow countrymen's fine form beating Germany to top-spot during the recent Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

Although Mowbray admits a call-up may add extra physical strain on Bednar, a continuation of his impressive form along with a similar goal ratio will only help catch the eye of Czech scouts.

"I'm sure they will know all about Roman," said Mowbray.

"But he's maybe playing in the wrong league to get recognition.

"Am I surprised he's not been called up?

"I would suggest they've had a pretty impressive qualification for the Euros and the coach is probably thinking 'why make changes?'

"But I'm sure they'll have half an eye on the situation and know who is scoring goals around Europe.

"Let's hope Roman can help us with his goals for the rest of the season.

"He seems to have the magic touch of working hard for the team but also, at that crucial moment, being in the right place in the six-yard box to score.

"We're delighted for Roman and I can sit here and say I'm actually quite happy at this moment that he hasn't got recognition.

"But for his benefit, if he keeps scoring goals, then it won't be long before people sit up and take notice."
