Scott Carson and Tony Mowbray both gave their praise to Jonas Olsson for his match winning man-of-the-match performance at Middlesbrough. The former NEC Nijmegen defender has only been at the club for a number of weeks but has already put in three impressive performances at the heart of the Baggies' defence.

Olsson scored his first goal for his new club in the 59th minute to break Middlesbrough hearts and then helped Albion keep their second successive clean sheet away from home with Scott Carson pulling off heroics in the Albion goal.

"It was a good 1-0 win," said Carson.

"For the majority of the second half we were on the back foot but the boys put their bodies on the line and made some great blocks.

"Fortunately I was able to play a part in that and made some good saves.

"It was a great team performance.

"It was important for us to get the first goal because percentages show that if you do that in the Premier League you've always got a good chance of winning the game.

"I'm delighted for Jonas because he's come in and done really well.

"Apart from his goal he defended superbly and was a rock at the back."

Mowbray echoed Carson's thoughts claiming the 28-year-old has far more to offer than simply his dogged defensive capabilities.

"He's a good player," said the Albion boss.

"He's still got to develop his upper-body strength and his heading.

"He's come from Dutch football where it's all about pass, pass, pass.

"The bottom line is I bought him because he is so good with the ball.

"In training every day he is better than a lot of our midfielders with his decision-making on his passes.

"It relieves the pressure.

"I'm not sure how many of his passes set us on our way today.

"But rather than him kicking the ball into the stands against West Ham two weeks ago he picked a fantastic pass to a midfielder, who turned and released Chris Brunt for the winner.

"He brings that to us and, if he puts his body on the line for the team like he did today and fights his corner, then we'll have a good player."
