Albion gave full league debuts to youngsters Sam Field and Brendan Galloway but the fresh legs were not enough to energise a the Baggies.

Like so many home performances under Tony Pulis, the Baggies lacked any attacking flair, invention or penetration. Here's what the papers had to say.

It was not the result Albion wanted, but it does at least mean Albion sign-off for the international break in the top half of the table.

A second clean sheet should not be sniffed at either, but a lack of ideas and imagination in the final third was there for all to see.

But the team's shortcomings in the final third were once again shown up against Aitor Karanka's lacklustre side who were there for the taking.

The Baggies have only picked up two points from their last six league matches at The Hawthorns, and on days like today, when Salomon Rondon was marked out of the game by the impressive Ben Gibson and Daniel Ayala, Albion look woefully inept going forward.

With three days left until the transfer window shuts, the need for creative talent is greater than ever, although Galloway's arrival has fixed any problems in defence by allowing Jonny Evans - who was once again superb - to move inside.

West Brom and Middlesbrough laboured to a wretched 0-0 draw at The Hawthorns as the Baggies' need for reinforcements grew.

In a game of few redeeming features it took Boro until 17 minutes from time to have their first shot on target with Albion equally toothless.

Baggies boss Tony Pulis wants five new players before Wednesday's transfer deadline and the hosts' failings were clear to see as they never broke down the resolute visitors.

A furious three days lie ahead for Tony Pulis after this dismal affair provided the latest evidence that significant strengthening is required to avoid another season at loggerheads with West Bromwich’s fans.

There were loud boos at the end of a stalemate that lacked anything to excite or indicate quite why Sky had deemed it a fixture worthy of live broadcast and Wednesday night’s transfer deadline looms larger than ever.

West Brom are a tight unit and kept their second clean sheet of the season to move to four points but are in drastic need of creativity and flair. That has been at the crux of the discord between Pulis and West Brom’s fans since his arrival but the Welshman knows as much and has been trying to make signings all summer.
