Steele sets his sights on No.1 spot

Luke Steele has revealed his 'ambition' of keeping the Baggies' No.1 shirt after his debut in the 2-1 victory over Leicester City. The young keeper, signed from Manchester United 16 months ago, was cruely denied his first clean-sheet in Albion colours after a controversial equaliser by Iain Hume in the 75th minute.

Steele had already kept Leicester at bay with a fantastic save from a Patrick Kisnorbo header before the 'keeper appeared to have been fouled as he tried to collect a Martin Fulop punt upfield. With the injured Dean Kiely expected to be out for up to three weeks, and with five Championship games in the next 22 days, Steele sees the opportunity of regular first-team football as his chance to establish himself in the first XI.

"This is an important stage for me in my career at the club," the 23-year old said.

"Obviously I hadn't played and it was a frustrating time for me.

"I played games on loan for Coventry and then made a move from United it felt like I was going to get first-team action.

"But then Bryan Robson departed the club and it hasn't really gone my way.

"But I've made my up to get my head down and get on with it.

"I feel like I've got a future at this club and I really want to do well for the club.

"I've played reserve games, which everyone knows are hard to get your head around, tried to do well in training and now I've got a chance.

"I don't know how long Dean will be out for but hopefully I'll get a few games in the team.

"My ambition isn't to come in as No. 2 and then go out when Dean's fit - I want to come in, do well and stay in."

Steele also reserved praise for goalscoring hero Craig Beattie and defenders, Shelton Martis and Jared Hodgkiss who also made their first competitive starts for the club.

"Jared and Shelton both play regularly for the reserves, as does Pele, but it was a bit of mish-match and the lads did well," The stopper continued.

"Leicester didn't have many chances on goal so credit to them - they applied themselves well.

"I was pleased with my first-half save.

"I didn't have much to do but I felt good and it was all going well.

"We were heading for victory so obviously their goal was a big moment in the game but then Craig Beattie came up with a stunning winner.

"If that hadn't happened I'd be very, very upset."
